Jaipur - the Pink City of India and the capital of Rajasthan - displays a remarkable harmony and architectural splendor. Built in 1727 A.D. by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, Jaipur is one of the most favoured tourist destinations in India. The ancient heart of the Pink City still beats in its fairy-tale palaces, rugged fortresses perched on barren hills and broad avenues that dot the entire city.

The only planned city of its time, Jaipur is encircled by a formidable wall. During holidays in Jaipur, travel to the renowned sand dunes of Rajasthan and enjoy the camel ride, picnic at the nearby Ramgarh Lake, watch a movie at the famous Raj Mandir theatre, play elephant polo at the Rambagh Palace or simply be in gorgeous green gardens. There is a timeless appeal to Jaipur's colorful bazaars where one can shop for Rajasthani handlooms and trinkets. Beautifully laid out gardens and parks, attractive monuments and marvelous heritage hotels, once the residence of Maharaja's are worth admiration. Not to mention the ambling camels and cheerful people in multi-hued costumes that make your travel to Jaipur a memorable one.

Jaipur Sightseeing
The City Palace of Jaipur: Standing gracefully in the heart of the old Jaipur city, the City Palace is an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal art & architecture. It's a must-see architectural gem for tourists going for Jaipur travel. The City Palace is marked by projecting balconies, arches on slender pillars, ornate entrances and occupies a large area divided into a series of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace sprawls over one-seventh of the area of the walled city. The City Palace houses a museum with a superb collection of Rajasthani costumes and armory of Mughals and Rajputs, and miniature paintings, carpets, royal paraphernalia.

Jantar Mantar: The largest stone observatory in the world, the Jantar Mantar is an amazing architectural and scientific marvel. Built by Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of five observatories in India, the Jantar Mantar is located near the gate of City Palace in Jaipur. Its complex instruments, whose setting and shapes are scientifically designed, represent the high points of medieval Indian astronomy. The most striking of these are the Ram Yantras used for gauging altitudes.

Hawa Mahal: Built in 1799 A.D. the Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds is a major Rajput landmark in Jaipur. This five storey building along the main street of the old city is in pink splendor with semioctagonal and delicately honey combed sandstone windows. The monument was originally conceived with the aim of enabling ladies of the royal household to watch the everyday life and royal processions of the city.

Amber Fort: Standing tall over a small hillock overlooking the Pink City of India, Amber Fort is the classic romantic Rajasthan fort-palace. Set in a picturesque location, Amber is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Built in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh, it sprawls on the hillside. Its construction was started by Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by his descendant Jai Singh I. For an experience that's truly royal, tourists on holidays in Jaipur can reach the fort through snaking pathways on elephant back.

Jaigarh Fort: Also known as the fort of victory, Jaigarh Fort is a rugged structure built in 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh. The fort is perched on a cliff and is surrounded by huge battlements with inside walkways offering stunning views on all sides. The world's largest cannon on wheel, Jaivan, is to be found here. The Jaigarh Fort has more or less same structure as of Amber Fort and provides some excellent view of the city of Jaipur and the Amber Fort.

Nahargarh Fort: Nahargarh or the Tiger Fort is the first of the three forts built by the kings of Jaipur. Built in 1734 by Jai Singh II, the fort provides stunning views of the city of Jaipur down below to the Man Sagar Lake. The imposing fort harbors many legends and three kings have added their stamp at different times to the structures within the fort.

Govind Devji Temple: The most popular spireless temple of Jaipur dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is located in the central pavilion of the Jai Niwas Garden to the north of Chandra Mahal. The image of the patron deity-Govind Devji, originally installed in a temple of Vrindavan, was reinstalled here by Sawai Jai Singh II as his family deity.

Ram Niwas Bagh: A lush spacious garden with a zoo, an aviary, a greenhouse, a herbarlum, a museum and popular sport ground. It was built by Sawai Ram Singh II in the 1868 A.D. as a famine relief project. The Albert Hall-fine example of Indo Sarcenic style of architecture designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, was opened later with an exquisite collection of sculptures, paintings, decorative wares, natural history specimen, and Egyptian mummy and the celebrated Persian carpet.

Birla Planetarium: The Planetarium offers unique audio-visual education and entertainment with its modern computerized projection system.

Moti Doongari and Lakshmi Narayan Temple: Moti Doongari is a privately owned hilltop fort built like a scottish castle. The Ganesh Temple at the foot of the hill and the marvellous Lakshmi Narayan Temple built in marbles a few years back, are also noteworthy.

Kanak Valley: The Kanak Valley formed by the Aravali ranges adjoins the Amber Fort and stretches towards the pink city of Jaipur. The hills and valleys are covered with dhok (Anogeissus Pendula) and Kadamba trees. Traveling deeper into the valley one comes across numerous waterfalls, lotus ponds and flowering plants. In summer when the 'flame of the forest' bursts into bloom it is as if the entire forest is aflame. Migratory birds like the kingfisher, spotted dove and Neel Kanth are frequent visitors.
